Dr. Tevya Hunter
I’m a clinical psychologist who works with adults and emerging adults with diverse presentations, concerns, and life stories. I started working in private practice early in my graduate training which was a hugely influential experience that continues to guide my practice today. During this time, I developed my earliest passion in psychology —psychotherapy. Since that time, I have been a firm believer that the foundation of therapy is the therapeutic relationship, which I foster through unconditional positive regard, empathy, and validation. Sometimes the therapeutic relationship itself creates change— changing how the individual sees themselves, feels about themselves, and relates to others. Building on the relationship, additional approaches to facilitating change can be implemented, depending on the individual’s specific concerns or goals for therapy.
Another influential experience in my early career was working with veterans, currently serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and the RCMP at the Operational Stress Injury Clinic. This is where I developed a special interest in helping individuals heal after trauma, which remains a central focus of my work today.

My Approach
I trust that individuals are the experts of their own lives and believe that my role as a therapist is to create a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment to explore current patterns of thinking and behaving, to consider alternative perspectives, and to make meaning of confusing or distressing experiences. I work with an integrative approach which means I draw on a number of different theories and interventions, tailored to each individual. Common therapies I implement include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Rogerian Client-Centered Therapy, and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). For trauma, I use evidence-based interventions including Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
